ATRIAL FLUTTER
It is a common arrhythmia characterized by rapid and coordinated atrial contractions that are different from normal ones. There are various causes: arrhythmia is often secondary to other heart diseases or other diseases that have nothing to do with the heart; arrhythmia can rarely occur in an apparently healthy heart. Palpitations are the most frequent symptom. Other symptoms are shortness of breath, dizziness, tiredness, chest pain, pulsations in the neck, ringing in the ears, fainting or syncope. There are different types of therapy: drugs, electric shock (external electrical cardioversion) and ablation. The arrhythmologist evaluates the most appropriate therapy to make the arrhythmia go away and to prevent it from returning in relation to the type of flutter (there are different types), the frequency of episodes and in relation to other parameters. Generally speaking, it can be said that for the most frequent form of atrial flutter, also known as “typical”, the therapy of choice is transcatheter ablation, which allows for very high rates of efficacy and low rates of complications.
